Redcliffe Padres Baseball

‘Club Chat’

December 2017

Holiday Greetings

The club’s executive committee, life members and volunteers, would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy, festive, restful holiday period. Whether you only have the public holidays off, or take a holiday, enjoy every minute with family and friends and travel safely.

If you happen to be travelling through Redcliffe, keeping an eye on the complex is always helpful, especially when there tend to be young people seeking their own party. Thanks in advance.

Season Break

Happy Season Break to all. With the Senior teams wrapping up over the weekend, now all Junior and Senior players (excluding last minute make up games) can put their feet up. We are so proud of all teams this season, from our Tee ballers to our Division 1 team; each and every player has reason to celebrate. There have been many achievements; from final wins, to great hits or pitching. We are super proud and Padres teams are performing really well across the region or league.

This season 17/18, is a unique one in terms of the Junior teams. As the season is broken into two series for the Little League, Junior League and Senior League divisions, there is a new series beginning in January. Padres has nominated to have the same amount of teams across each division, so we shouldn’t see much change.

Seniors commence back in the week commencing on the 8th of January, with Juniors commencing when school starts back, so follow our Senior teams for some holiday entertainment.

Padres plays host to NZ touring team

Our Junior Director of Coaching (JDOC) David West, has organised teams to play against visiting New Zealand teams on Wednesday the 3rd of January.

11am- NZ touring team arrives

12.30pm- Padres players latest time to arrive

1.30pm- 1st set of games

3pm- Free Sausage sizzle (everyone is invited!)

3.30pm- 2nd set of games

All members are invited to this day, to support the event, watch the games or enjoy the sausage sizzle. It is our way of welcoming in 2018 and starting the year of with a great event for our baseball community.  Canteen will be open for drink purchases only.

Import Player News

Padres import player arrived back in October and has been a key player within our Division 1 squad, since arriving. Blake Oyler has come from the USA and has snuck home for some Christmas festiveness, but will be back in January.

Blake is enjoying his coaching role alongside Hayden and is relishing the opportunity to live with a member’s family. We as a club are lucky to have an array of families offer to host our import players over the years and this year the Lawrence family have welcomed Blake. Without these supports, we simply couldn’t provide these opportunities to international players who bring with them a depth of knowledge.

We would like to thank the Leanne, Rod and Cody for welcoming Blake and providing him not just a house, but an Australian home.

Canteen News

Lesa and Mark Boys are our canteen convenors for the rest of this season. After a couple of seasons, Carolan and Allan decided after the first weekend of the season, that spending Friday night, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights away from their everyday lives was making them see baseballs in their sleep. Thanks for supporting the new convenors and ensuring it was a smooth transition.

Volunteer Roles

Padres is a great club, because of the volunteers. All positions in our club have a rebate amount that is comparable to the hours spent on the role, but could never provide a monetary amount that matches the value of each person. From the canteen convenor, to the facilities crew, to coaches, scorers or umpires, Padres has all types of volunteers. The budget allows for 2 roles within a team; Coach and Assistant or Manager and the umpire and scorers are required for each game/team and budgeted accordingly. Each and every volunteer is valued, whether you provide support when you can, or each and every week. Wow- it makes a huge difference!

Our Treasurer, will rebate these roles for outstanding fee amounts or provide a specific amount transferred to your account as a thank you for the time spent in terms of fuel, uniform, equipment etc.,  If you do not have a signed rebate form or have not applied for a role, then the rebate cannot be paid.

There are always opportunities to support our club and just contact our Secretary if you can offer support in any which way. We know Facilities Crew are always looking for some hands to make light work of the field maintenance.

February 10th 2018 is our 25th Season Celebration Day

There is not much time, less than 2 months!

Mark your calendars for Saturday the 10th of February at Talobilla Park.

We are hosting a day of fun on this date, culminating in an evening feast just before our Division 1 team play against the Toowoomba Rangers. There will be activities across the day and hopefully we will play host to many junior games also.

If you have liked our dedicated Facebook page, search Redcliffe Padres 25th Season Event Day

Our display tent will feature a variety of Padres items from the commencement to now, so it will be a day to venture back into the past and look forward to the future.

If you have any memorabilia, photos, images, equipment, uniforms etc., please contact David Hopkins (Hoppy) on or mobile 0408 142 362.

Trivia Night

Chameleon Housing and Padres are joining forces again this season and the date for the meeting of the minds has been scheduled.

Clear your calendars on the 24th of February 2018.

The event will be held at Hercules Road State School in their hall.
This venue allows for additional tables as last year the number had to be capped.

Tickets will be available for purchase from early 2018!

Make sure you get a team together of approximately 8, as it is bound to be another fun night.

This night has always been one to celebrate the season and showcase the talents of our members, whether it be with the best post-trivia video, headache or winning table on the night.

Member system

Just to let our members know…. 1 week before the commencement of the season, Baseball Australia through Baseball Queensland launched a new database system. You would have noticed that sign on this year was a different process, due to the different system. The old system has been rolled over and we were originally told we couldn’t utilise it. But alas, it is still in the background. This is the reason why email communication has not been possible as there is no availability to do a mail out in the new system as yet. We have been assured it is coming and we have been working with the team at Sports Desq, but haven’t achieved success yet.

Thanks for your patience.

We are very lucky to have our major communication mode of Facebook, very active and the best in QUEENSLAND!

Early update….

In April 2018, Padres will play host to a Schoolboys tournament the week prior to the school holidays. We would love support from our member base for this few days.

Ready to play ball???

This weekend marks the re-commencement of our 16/17 Season with all Junior and Senior teams to take the field.

Some Senior players have been playing for a couple of weeks and they have already made an impact on the field, with various wins and personal best plays.

Are you ready to give it your best and play like a Padre? I bet our juniors are ready are raring to take the field in grey and red and display great sportsmanship and give their best.

Contact your coach if you have any queries, or head to the facebook page or download the Baseball Qld App on the App or Google Play store.

Trivia night: Saturday 11th February @ 6.30pm

This season, there is no golf day due to circumstances beyond our control, so the combined major event with Chameleon House this season, is a trivia night!

All proceeds are split between our organisations.

Please support your club by attending, just $10 a ticket.

Food and drinks are available for sale on the night and the venue is licenced- so arrange a babysitter.

Tickets must be purchased prior to the event- so purchase through the information available on our Facebook page and website (flyer), or come into the canteen and purchase a ticket or contact us directly by replying to this email.

The first 4 tables purchased this weekend- just $80 a table, will receive a bottle of wine on the night!

Come and buy a ticket or a table and ensure you dont miss out. All tickets must be purchased prior to the 1st of February. We would love about 80 Padres members there, but 100 would be better- to beat our last years total.

Get Started Vouchers

An update on some changes......

What are Get Started Vouchers?

Get Started Vouchers is an initiative to provide up to $150 to eligible children and young people, to help pay for sport or recreation club membership and/or participation fees through registered clubs.

If the child/young person or their parent/carer/guardian holds a valid Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, they can apply online as soon as the round opens. These children do not need to use the referral agent process.

Updates to the referral agent process

The department is changing the referral agent process to ensure that children and young people who can least afford the costs to participate are supported by Get Started Vouchers.  To ensure that the vouchers are going to those families most in need, a new referral agent process will be implemented from Round 9.

The department now requires that eligible referral agents register with the department to be able to refer children and young people for a voucher.  Further details regarding referral agent criteria and eligibility requirements are on our website, along with fact sheets for parents and referral agents. Simply Google ‘Get Started Vouchers’ or go to the information here

If you think you may be eligble, please look into it and pay $150 off the sign on fees for next season!

Padres night at the Bandits

A huge thank you to our members who came along to cheer on the Bandits and support the game, whilst supporting our club. Just for attending, we raised about $400 in profit from the evening. It was a lot of fun watching our juniors run onto the field, enjoy some games in between Innings and be a bat boy or two!

Congratulations for being part of the biggest crowd that has attended from a club! The sea of red was visible and it was a great night enjoyed by all.

Individual Successes....

There have been many, so we will save these until Newsletter 9 to ensure we have the most up to date information.

I know there has been a selection and some U18 and U16 state players and we are immensely proud.

Keep an eye out for the panels- I don’t think you will miss them!

China touring teams

Unfortunately, 2017 teams will not be attending to represent Padres. We will be seeking to run trial dates, fundraising events and establishing payment plans for the option to be provided in 2018. We would like to develop players as much as possible, so this avenue will help encourage this model.

More on that in 2017. Thank you for those who submitted an EOI or attended trials, we were really trying to get an age group across the line with numbers… Qld Dolphins are taking a team- so good luck to those players and enjoy the experience!

Good luck to senior teams on the field this weekend- everybody else, enjoy any break you may be lucky enough to get and a Congratulations for an awesome first half of Season 2016/17.

We will be offering tickets for the night at a discounted rate of

Bandits are playing host to Sydney that night, so it will be a great QLD vs NSW battle.

It is a night to wear your Padres red and enjoy a night with our friends from the baseball community.

We will be arranging a ticketing system ASAP and will ask for pre-payment of tickets prior to the night, with collection to be at the gate, meeting at 6pm. The game commences at 6.30pm, so it will be a great evening. Please do not purchase tickets from the website or any other method, as this will not provide the monies back to Padres.

Please support this event as we have heard from many clubs who have had their night already, that is was a very successful evening.

Junior Director of Coaching (JDOC)

Shining the spotlight on our JDOC, Mr David West, also known as Westy, Dave or coach

Dave has been with Padres as a guiding light for many years and alongside his wife Sally and family members, has helped shape our club to be what it is today.  Dave is at the field almost daily in his capacity as JDOC, Coach, player, grounds support or spectator.

Being the JDOC of Padres is a huge role that encompasses many facets and as our club has grown, becomes ever more complex with supporting and guiding many coaches of our junior players and providing additional training support and advice.

The JDOC role is aimed at our junior teams, so Westy fulfils a role of:

  • Imparting knowledge to and mentoring coaches from T Ball up to Under 16

  • Co-ordinating junior team selections from Little League up to Under 16 in liaison with junior coaches

  • And much more….

Thank you David for your impact each and every week on our teams, our community is richer for your voluntary engagement at Padres and it is very much appreciated.

David hosts Monday night baseball school, which is now on a break over the festive season. Returning on January the 23rd, so stay tuned for updates.

High Performance Player Development (HP) role announcement

Alongside our JDOC role, we have now asked Glen Brockie to undertake a High Performance Player Development role to target development of players, ensuring smooth transitions into our senior teams and skill development of various players.

Glen has commenced his role and is targeting individuals at this stage, ensuring that our juniors transitioning into senior grades are supported and developed to maintain their skill and fitness to cope with the demands. He has also been hosting some skill development sessions, which will increase in the new year.

The HP role is aimed at player development and senior coach liaison, so Glen fulfil a role of:

  • Liaising with Operations and another member of the Management Committee in the selection of coaches for Under 16 to Majors inclusive

  • Liaising with the A Grade Coach and other senior coaches in the transition ofjunior players into senior ranks

  • Hosting development sessions and inviting guest coaches to develop players

Stay tuned in 2017 for further information about the HP role!

Club Captain

Introducing…. Danny Dunsdon

Have you seen 23??

The number is on our fence and on the back of our Club Captain – Danny.

Danny takes on the newly introduced role of Club Captain. Although just being announced, Danny has been mentoring younger players, offering advice, introducing Sam Holland to juniors and been around our grounds for many years. He is an ear to listen and an eye to watch for ways he can support players, coaches and community members.

If there is something you aren’t sure about or just need to speak about the awesome world of baseball, seek out Danny and he is more than happy to mentor or guide.

Chocolate Drive

All monies, now urgently sought.

Thank you for your engagement with the 16/17 Cadbury Chocolate Fundraising Drive… it was great fun to see engagement from a large proportion of players and families. We can’t do it without all of your support, so thank you!

We think just 1 Under 8 team didn’t manage to collect chocolates, so thank you to each team from U16 down and to various seniors that offered to support. We have 9 boxes left in the clubhouse for just $60 each, so if anyone can take them off our hands for enjoyment over Christmas… just come on down!

The canteen is open Friday night from 6 to 10 and Sunday from 7 to 11, so please drop all monies in this weekend, or drop them to your coach and they can contact us for collection.

Prize announcements to be made mid-December when all monies are collected… It is a close battle

China touring teams

Thank you to the 3 players who attended on Sunday for the trial. The low number does tell me that perhaps the tour will not proceed this year… unless; there is an influx of EOI in the next 12 hours. There is a committee meeting tonight so a decision on this will be made tonight.

Holiday Break

From this weekend, most teams apart from most Senior teams playing one more round are on a break. Come on down this Friday night for our last A grade home game of the season and enjoy the action. Our teams are all playing at the top of their game, so come and enjoy the show.

Whilst on holidays, we hope everyone stays safe and enjoys the festivities.

Thank you for a great first of the season and we look forward to an exciting 2017.

Trivia Night

The joint Padres and Chameleon House fundraising event is being held at our local PCYC on the 11th of February at 6.30pm. Cost is $10 per head, with a maximum of 8 players per team.  Secure parking is offered on site at the Padres ground, so I am sure we can all enjoy the evening!
